Web of Science Research Assistant

The Web of Science Research Assistant is a generative AI tool that searches the Web of Science database to provide summarized answers with listed sources. It works jointly with Web of Science's Journal Citations in providing not only scientific articles, but also graphs and citation maps to illustrate the field of research you are exploring.

Web of Science currently categorizes queries into two types: "Summary Queries" and "Document Search Queries." Summary queries are answered with a short summary of information on a specific topic, while Document Search queries are answered with the retrieval of 8 most relevant articles on a specific topic. Both queries will  provide a summary of the information collected and the list of references that information was taken from.

To write a good query you need to be specific and clearly define what you are looking for. Provide details such as countries or timeliness to narrow down your search, and make sure to mention the topic of interest to ensure relevant results. If you want to continue the search on your own, go the end of the reference list the Research Assistant provides and select "View additional documents relevant to this response." This will take you the full search results list where you can filter down the results further and look beyond the first eight sources the assistant provided.

When looking at the Research Assistant's reference list, you can click on each article for its record. The pop-up contains the journal information and the article's citation statistics. From here, you can either view the full record or save it to your EndNote.

Other features the Web of Science Research Assistant includes:

  • Summarizing specific articles if you provide the article's DOI;
  • Searching for seminal/foundational papers;
  • Searching for top authors in a field;
  • Search in multiple languages;
  • And search for documents by topic, institution name, country, citation count, author, and journal.
