Beginner's Guide to Web of Science: Profiles

How to effectively and fully use the Web of Science of database.

Journal Profiles

Journal Profile with Metrics

Web of Science gives each of its journals a Journal Profile detailing information about the publication, like the publisher and its research areas. The Journal Profile also lists the Journal Impact Factor and Journal Citation Indicator.

The Journal Impact Factor (JIF) is a metric designed to help evaluate the quality and reach of academic journals. A journal's JIF measures the average number of times the articles in that journal have been cited over the last two years. A high JIF indicates a quality journal; however, a low JIF can indicate a quality journal in regard to the humanities.

The Journal Citation Indicator (JCI), on the other hand, measures its impact by comparing the number of citations a journal has to others within the same field. The average JCI score is one.

Researcher Profiles

Researchers Results Tab Researcher Profile with Impact Metrics

Web of Science provides a tab to search Researcher Profiles related to your search query. A Researcher Profile provides basic information on the author of an article, such as their related organizations, research areas, number of publications, and the Author Impact. The Author Impact measures the number of times an author has been cited against a curated benchmark of similar articles within the field and is presented as a beamplot. Similar to a journal's metrics, the Author Impact summary is designed to help you find quality researchers within your field.
