How to Use This Guide

The subject matter included in this guide is used for face-to-face instruction for English 101 (Comp 1) students with the Reference & Instruction Librarian.

To use this guide on your own, choose your own adventure! Move through the guide in the order of the menu, start with the video tutorials, or visit pages as you need to strengthen your search skills and build information literacy. Practicing the methods and strategies in a search engine or database as you work through this guide is highly recommended.

Learning Objectives

By the end of class sessions, you should be able to:

  • Determine extent of information needed

  • Identify relevant potential resources of various types and formats in order to fulfill an information need

  • Compare content available through various databases

  • Construct search strategies using multiple techniques in order to efficiently and effectively retrieve results

  • Assess resources from set evaluation criteria in order to determine if they fulfill an information need
