Distance Students: Services of the Mundt Library

Access to Resources

Your library ID number
is your key to free access to the Library's many resources.

It allows you to login to online research databases and resources provided by the Mundt Library when you are not on DSU's Madison campus.

For more information and login instructions, see Login Instructions.
If you are unable to login with your ID and password, please contact the DSU librarians.

Library Services

The following library services are provided for all students enrolled in Dakota State University courses. If you have questions, please contact DSU librarians.

Research Tools

The Library provides many research databases for finding books, articles in magazines and journals, DVDs, and more.

Find the following in middle section of the Library's homepage:

  • "Search (almost) Everything" - This search tool provides a one-stop search of the Library Catalog and many of library's research databases so that you retrieve books, ebooks, magazine & journal articles, etc. It can be found front & center on the Library homepage.
  • "Database Quicklinks A-Z" - Located in the Research QuickLinks box on the library homepage, use this drop-down menu to select a specific research database.
  • "Databases by Subject" -  Use this link to find out which databases are available for researching specific subjects. The link can be found in the Research QuickLinks box on the library homepage.
  • "Journal Finder" - This tool is used to search for a specific magazine or journal title in order to find out if the Library has access to the full articles of the journal (not just citation and abstract). The link to Journal Finder is in the Research Quicklinks box on the library homepage.

Research Guides

  • "Research Guides: Courses/Majors/Subjects" - This link in the Research QuickLinks box on the library homepage provides a list of guides for various subjects.. The guides are designed to lead you to the best research databases and other sources for your course work and assignments.

Document Delivery & Interlibrary Loan

When distance students are not able to get online access to the sources they need for research, the Mundt Library will deliver the materials to them. For example, materials include:

  • Photocopies of articles from magazines, newspapers, journals, and reference sources. They are emailed and do not need to be returned. No charge.
  • Books and other materials which must be returned to the Mundt Library within a designated time period. They are mailed directly to the student. Distance students pay the cost of shipping materials back to the Mundt Library.

If the Library does not have the needed item, staff will borrow or obtain a copy from another library.

To request items, you will need to provide full details about each item you want (author, title, etc.).

Tutorials and Help

Don't hesitate to ask for help directly from librarians! We are happy to help!

  • "Ask a Librarian" - This link can be found in the Library Information box on the right side of the library homepage.
  • "Ask Us" - This pop-out button may be found on the right side of most library web pages.

Instructional materials to help you are also available:

  •  "Get Help" is a link in the Library Information box on the right side of the library homepage. It provides tutorials, guides, and other instructional materials.

What distance students can expect

Distance students are entitled to and should expect resources and services equivalent to those provided to on-campus students.

The Mundt Library upholds the standards for distance learning library services set forth by the Association of College and Research Libraries.

Every student, faculty member, administrator, staff member, or any other member of an institution of higher education, is entitled to the library services and resources of that institution, including direct communication with the appropriate library personnel, regardless of where enrolled or where located in affiliation with the institution."
